Sausalito

From houseboats to hillside mansions, Sausalito exemplifies an eclectic community. Sausalito offers the shortest commute to San Francisco from Marin, and home prices range from $800,000 for a condo/townhouse to $10,000,000 for the home of your dreams. Made up of “empty nesters,” professionals, small businesses, and tourists, this bayside town is picturesque and lively. Tourists take the ferry from San Francisco or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to have lunch, dinner, or walk the town. At the North end, you’ll find shops geared toward these tourists, while at the center of Sausalito or “New Town,” you’ll find the locals’ zone.

Some suggested things to do on your visit include: coffee at Taste of Rome, lunch at Cibo, and dinner at Sushi Ran, Copita, Poggio Trattoria, or Bar Bocce. You might also want to check out Napa Valley Burger, known for its top-notch gourmet burgers, or The Spinnaker, which offers amazing views and delicious seafood. For a unique dining experience, visit Avatar’s, which specializes in innovative Indian cuisine, or Kitti’s Place, a family-owned restaurant offering an eclectic Thai-Californian menu. If you're in the mood for a classic American breakfast or brunch, Fred's Coffee Shop is a local favorite.

In between meals, take a walk along the bayside trail or paddle board to explore the houseboat communities. If you're planning to stay overnight or longer, consider booking a room at Cavallo Point, Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa, or The Inn Above Tide.

There is a houseboat community representing four hundred floating homes where you can find anything from a cozy little shack-for-one to a multi-level floating mansion with a hot tub. Like most of Marin, Sausalito offers breathtaking hiking and biking trails, and with the Bay being such a focal point, water sports are popular as well, with many boaters and kayakers taking to the Bay on weekends.
